Clemens Schuldt

Music Director Orchestre symphonique de Québec

Clemens Schuldt is Music Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. Internationally recognised for his carefully conceived programming, he brings together the cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire with lesser-known works and contemporary music, placing composers from different periods in dialogue with one another.

He opens the 2026/27 season with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec in a programme pairing Shostakovich and Bartok with Beethoven's Violin Concerto, featuring Vadim Gluzman. He returns later in the season to lead the orchestra's much-anticipated Brahms Festival, continuing to shape its artistic profile through distinctive programming and innovative concert formats. Since 2023, he has broadened the orchestra's artistic identity through imaginative curating, presenting projects that combine orchestral music with flamenco, collaborations with Indigenous artists, the popular 'Concert en Jeans' series and the orchestra's first Beethoven Festival. In recognition of his work as Music Director of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, he was honoured with the Prix Opus Directeur Artistique de l'Année (Artistic Director of the Year) from the Conseil québécois de la musique

Elsewhere this season, Clemens Schuldt makes his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra alongside violinist Augustin Hadelich, as well as with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. He also returns to Japan, where he renews collaborations with the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa.

Summer festival appearances include the Festival de Lanaudière with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec and a return to the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, with a programme spanning more than a century of music, from Richard Strauss and Franz Schreker to Bryce Dessner, reflecting his distinctive approach to curating programmes that place established repertoire and contemporary music in dialogue.

Opera continues to form an important part of Clemens Schuldt's artistic profile. In spring 2027, he returns to Garsington Opera to conduct a new production of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, directed by PJ Harris. Recent operatic highlights include his debut at Opéra de Québec with Puccini's La Bohème, the acclaimed production of Mozart's Mitridate, re di Ponto with The English Concert at Garsington Opera, and Die Zauberflöte at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. Earlier engagements include Mozart's Così fan tutte at Opera North. He also made his acclaimed debut at the Venice Biennale conducting George Benjamin's Written on Skin with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI.

Clemens Schuldt is a former winner of the prestigious Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London and was Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra for one year. Born in Bremen, he first studied violin and performed with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. He then completed his conducting studies in Düsseldorf, Vienna and Weimar. Today, he is Professor of Conducting at the Conservatoire de Québec.

"To that please add the conductor, Clemens Schuldt, whose exuberance and affinity with the young musicians made the performance a thing of distinction and emotional impact on a level rarely reached in even the most experienced hands."

Robert Beale, The Arts Desk, June 2026

"It was a return after a long absence for the Orchestre symphonique de Québec (OSQ) at the Festival de Lanaudière on Friday evening. Clemens Schuldt was making his debut there, accompanied by Charles Richard-Hamelin... The program, with its Nordic flair, showcased the fruits of the German conductor’s excellent work at the helm of the orchestra. "

Christophe Huss, Le Devoir, July 2026

"Clemens Schuldt’s presence is a real delight: the orchestra is ever-present and highly active, and the conductor moves seamlessly through the performance, constantly supporting the singers. The OSQ’s sound is rich and admirably cohesive."

Christophe Huss, Le Devoir, May 2026

"Clemens Schuldt was in complete control of his orchestra, delivering a fiery “Tempête” from the “Interludes marins” and a touching “Cygne de Tuonela” (with a subtle Hélène Déry on the English horn)."

Emmanuel Bernier, Le Soleil, April 2026

"And what can we say about his conducting style...he embodies youth, a ray of joy and enchantment through dynamic, different and communicative gestures creating a palpable symbiosis both with the excellent musicians of the OSQ who accompany him in a musical pleasure and especially with his audience."

Gaston Déry, Le Soleil, February 2024

"Clemens Schuldt conducts with assured grace and constant vitality: he looks after his singers and obtains moments of beauty from the orchestra."

Robert Beale, The Art Desk, February 2024
