Håkan Hardenberger is the greatest trumpet soloist today. Alongside his phenomenal performances of the classical repertory, he is also held in high regard as a pioneer of many significant and virtuosic new trumpet works.
Håkan Hardenberger performs with the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Wiener Philharmoniker, Swedish Radio Symphony, London Symphony, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and NHK Symphony Orchestra. Conductors he regularly collaborates with include Pierre Boulez, Alan Gilbert, Daniel Harding, Paavo Järvi, Ingo Metzmacher, Andris Nelsons, Esa-Pekka Salonen and David Zinman.
The works written for and championed by Hardenberger stand as key highlights in the repertory and include those by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Hans Werner Henze, Rolf Martinsson, Olga Neuwirth, Arvo Pärt and Mark Anthony Turnage and HK Gruber’s concerto Aerial, which has received in excess of 60 performances by Hardenberger.
Highlights in 2010/11 include appearances with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich and the Philharmonia Orchestra with Andris Nelsons, Rotterdam Philharmonic with Robin Ticciati and the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin with Cornelius Meister. Hardenberger performs Gruber’s Busking on tour with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and John Storgårds in Germany and Istanbul, and also gives the works its French premiere with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Further concerts include the Staatskapelle Berlin, BBC Scottish Symphony, Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the Orquesta de Galicia.
Hardenberger is Artist in Residence at the Philharmonie Dresden presenting a variety of concerts including the German premiere of Tobias Broström’s concerto with Michael Sanderling and a play/direct programme. Further afield he is play/directing the Gothenburg Symphony, the brass of the Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia and the Swedish Wind Ensemble.
In recital Hardenberger performs with pianist Roland Pöntinen at the Wigmore Hall, preceded by a tour in Sweden. With percussionist Colin Currie he undertakes a residency at Aldeburgh before they take their new programme to Hannover and Seoul. Hardenberger plays at the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival, to include chamber performances with Leif Ove Andsnes.
Forthcoming recordings include a Miles Davis project with NDR Big Band involving new works by Mikkelborg, Muthspiel and Turnage. Hardenberger’s extensive discography on the Philips, EMI and BIS Records labels includes a disc of Turnage, Gruber and Eotvös works with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Peter Eötvös (Deutsche Grammophon). He recently recorded Neuwirth’s miramondo multiplo with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and Ingo Metzmacher and Gruber’s Busking with Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
Håkan Hardenberger was born in Malmö, Sweden. He began studying the trumpet at the age of eight with Bo Nilsson in Malmö and continued his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, with Pierre Thibaud, where he is returning to give masterclasses, and in Los Angeles with Thomas Stevens. He is a professor at the Malmö Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.
