Francesco Angelico
Conductor
The Italian conductor Francesco Angelico was announced as the winner of the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis in May 2011, having held a scholarship there since 2007. He first attracted international attention when he won the 2nd prize at the International Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen in 2008 and, in 2010, the “Music Critics’ Prize” for the best performance at the Slovakian Central European Music Festival, conducting the Slovakia Sinfonia.
In the 2010/2011 season Angelico gave his debut with Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan, the Orquesta Sinfonica de RTVE Madrid and Sinfonia Varsovia. He has also appeared recently with Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie Herford, the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera and the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck, where he led the New Year concerts 2011.
In the current season, Angelico returns to the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano for a radio production, also Sinfonia Varsovia at Festival La Roque d'Anthéron and Gdansk. He also appears with Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester der Stadt Heidelberg, Orchestra di Padova e il Veneto and he will give his debut with Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin at Berlin Philharmonie in 2012.
His opera engagements have included “Il Telefono” by Gian Carlo Menotti in Lugano, the chamber opera “Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank” by Grigori Frid and Mozarts “Le nozze de Figaro” in Hannover, where he also assisted with Dallapiccolas “Il prigioniero”. In Tirana he has conducted Beethoven’s “Fidelio” and he also appeared at the Theater im Revier Gelsenkirchen with Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos”. In the 2011/2012 season, he will conduct Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” at Landestheater Innsbruck, Bellini "I capuleti i montecchi" at Opera Coburg and, in October 2011, he will conduct “Die Fledermaus” at Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz
Francesco Angelico finished his cello studies at the conservatory in Modena in 2001 and started conducting with Giorgio Bernasconi at Lugano in 2003. Up until completing his studies in 2006, he was Bernasconi’s assistant in the concert series for contemporary music “900 Passato e presente” for Swiss Radio in Lugano.
He has participated in masterclasses given by Carlo Maria Giulini, Herbert Blomstedt, Jorma Panula in Moscow, Amsterdam and Kuopio and he has also worked with Zoltán Pesko at the “Bartok Festival” in Szombathely. Born in 1977 in the Sicilian town of Caltagirone, Angelico currently lives in Hannover, Germany.
